Brickyard 33: A Historic Transformation

Chien Hwa Huang's Award-Winning Restoration of a Cold War Era Site

Located in Yangmingshan, Taipei, Brickyard 33 was once a shelter for US soldiers during the Cold War Era. The building held a significant history, serving as a physical and mental refuge for warriors far from home. Today, it stands as a testament to the past, transformed into a vibrant space that combines history with modern functionality.

The project, led by Chien Hwa Huang, was initiated in July 2014 and completed in November 2016. The design team respected the historical significance of the site, carefully restoring the overall structure and exterior to its original appearance. Rustic and industrial elements were introduced, and original materials such as timber beams, brick walls, and retro tiles were reused to restore the elegance of the historical architecture.

The uniqueness of Brickyard 33 lies in its multi-functionality. It serves as a restaurant, a performance venue, a bar, and a cultural hub.
